How do you find out how thick yarn you have spun? Or has the yarn label band been lost?
The WPI measuring tool will help you. WPI stands for wraps per inch. Wrap the yarn around an inch wide loop so that the yarn is side by side, not on top of each other. Then count how many threads you can fit in an inch and look at the table to see what gauge the thread is. If you have really thin yarn and can't reel it in an inch wide, use a centimeter-wide loop. Do a multiplication, the number of threads * 2.54 and check the table for the thickness corresponding to the number of inches.
The most common definitions of yarn thickness are here:
0 – 4 wpi = Jumbo
5 – 6 wpi = Super Bulky
7 wpi = Bulky
8 wpi = Aran
9 – 11 wpi = Worsted
11 – 15 wpi = DK (Double Knitting)
12 – 18 wpi = Sport
14 – 24 wpi = Fingering
20 – 30 wpi = Light Fingering
30 -40 wpi = Lace
40+ wpi = cobweb

Unlike the picture, there is a small hole in the gauge, which makes it easy to hang the gauge on a spinning wheel for safe keep.
